AIS-140 GPS Compliance – All you need to know!

Build-up:

As the Indian economy grows which results in the large migration of people from small towns to cities, creates exponential growth in vehicle ownership and public transportation. The rise of vehicles on road creates congestion and increase in road accidents. To address the problem and create better safety, security on road requires an intelligent transportation system, which can monitor the flow of traffic and provide quick response time in emergencies.

Why AIS-140 compliance required?

To make the transport system more efficient and technology-aided, of late it became a necessity for the government to introduce a platform, which can be centrally monitor all these vehicles.
The Government of India’s apex body Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) designed an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) under the Automotive Industry Standard-140 to ensure a state-of-art transport infrastructure with quality, efficiency, and safety. The system is designed with the objective to centrally monitoring all the passenger vehicles registered in the country and smoothening the traffic control to avoid congestions.

About AIS-140 compliance:

AIS-140, Automotive Industry Standard-140, is a standard as specified by ARAI – Automotive Research Association of India which states that all vehicles coming under the ‘passenger vehicles’ category, need to comply with AIS 140 guidelines, every commercial vehicle (with yellow number plate) must be installed with vehicle tracking systems and emergency button approved by ARAI and iCAT.
The notice from the Centre is clear, it states that every vehicle, be it passenger-carrying vehicles or other public transport vehicles registered on or after April 1, 2019, must be equipped with AIS-140 GPS systems for acquiring registration and fitness certificate from RTO Regional Transport Office.

As per the amendment from the central government, all state governments is explicitly making it compulsory to equip the vehicles with AIS-140 compliant GPS tracking system. BSNL has developed a national vehicle tracking portal to enable all states to check compliance as per mandate and then issue a registration or fitness certificate. The same will be integrated with the centrally operated VAHAN portal.
